Responsibilities

The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Proposal Writer in our Mission Advancement department!

This position can be remote/home based.

This individual will be responsible for development of creative, meaningful and compelling proposals, proposal templates, and highly personalized communications for solicitation and stewardship of major gift donors for prioritized funding opportunities. Responsible for serving as an editor, and writer for communications that largely impact major gift donors. Responsible for providing structure and ongoing improvements for the proposal development process. Responsible for serving as the primary point of contact for standard funding opportunity proposals, providing regular information updates and promptly answering questions from a variety of stakeholders in support of revenue development for the AHA.

  • Independently creates, writes, and edits major gift proposals and template proposals, focused primarily on prioritized major funding opportunities of the AHA. Conducts research and liaises with/ interviews staff to compose appropriate and effective copy for donor proposal and stewardship materials and templates, from brief letters, internally and externally facing summaries to long form proposals. Reviews and edits written materials to ensure quality and consistency with established organizational messages and branding. Guides and/or supports staff as needed to customize standard templates for submission to prospective donors.

  • Develops and leads/co-leads processes and protocols for Mission Advancement to establish proposal development flow and execution so that concepts are vetted and thoughtfully bundled together to ensure maximum organizational impact while aligning appropriately with donor capacity. Provides onboarding training to new staff on the proposal development process in Mission Advancement.

  • Serves as point of contact for questions about funding opportunity proposals, providing responses to proposal questions and thoroughly answering questions with a sense of urgency. Monitors and posts to the funding opportunity forum on MS Teams to alert users of proposal updates.

  • Compiles, writes and/or regularly updates boilerplate content and frequently used attachments to be used in a variety of proposals, such as introductions, history, explanation of indirect costs, and other frequently-used narrative. Provides access to content for self-service on SharePoint, to ensure fundraisers are able to pull from this content on demand.

  • Executes special projects as part of the Mission Advancement grants and operations team. Adapts easily to shifting priorities and unexpected deadlines. Performs other duties as requested and special projects at the request of the VP, Grants and Operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • Five (5) – Eight (8) years of relevant experience

  • Experience in communications, marketing, journalism or related non-profit field

  • Experience in grant, or proposal writing including serving as lead writer and managing the proposal development life cycle. Writing samples of personally-written proposals will be required.

  • Strong verbal and excellent business writing communications skills, including strong presentation skills

  • Superior attention to detail; outstanding organization and prioritization skills

  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and Project)

  • Flexibility in adapting to deadlines, changing schedules, priorities and unpredictable events

Preferred Experience:

  • Understanding or experience in the philanthropic landscape and donor cycle
