We are looking to fill an HBCU Scholars Program Director serving multiple southeastern and midwestern states. The director will oversee and execute ongoing academic support strategies of the American Heart Association Scholars Program at HBCUs to increase the number of Black and African American students at HBCUs who are seeking professional degrees and careers in the biomedical and health sciences.
The HBCU Scholars Director specifically will oversee American Heart Association Scholars Program’s matching and monitoring of a mentorship program between students and clinical research mentors over the course of the academic year to drive education and career opportunities for students majoring in health, science, and medical fields. The HBCU Director will assess and monitor vehicles to track participants’ progress and assess students’ work with volunteer mentors. You also will assist in the educational and virtual leadership workshops, assisting the workshop moderator(s) when necessary. The HBCU Scholars Director will be required to assist with special projects as needed.
This is a grant funded, full-time, temporary fixed date position scheduled to end May 31, 2023.
Some of your responsibilities will include (but not limited to):
Establishes and manages close working relationships/linkages with scholars, volunteer mentors, volunteer contacts at partnered HBCUs and follow ups on all communications and requests in a timely fashion, as well as alerts the Director of Collegiate Diversity Partnerships about situations impacting on the success and integrity of the HBCU Scholars Program.
Provides timely direction and resources to students and mentors while at the same time following an established tracking and monitoring system to ensure students and mentors are fully engaged in the program.
Collaborates with the Director of Collegiate Diversity Partnerships in the establishment of short- and long-term goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and participates in program and operational effectiveness as needed.
Participates in recruiting scholars, reviewing scholar applications, interviewing scholars, and assisting the HBCU Scholars Program Selection Committee as needed.
Assists in the registration of scholars for Scientific Sessions, travel to and from conferences and symposia, and monitors student activities at conferences and symposia. Assists in the procurement and preparation of all materials and products required at all conferences and symposia.
Updates and maintains HBCU Scholars Program recruitment and application materials.
Works with the Health Strategies specialist in logistics, budgetary, and program development tasks as needed.
Works with local AHA affiliates, volunteers, and board members in helping scholars engage in AHA mission activities.

Bachelor’s degree with understanding of academia. Understanding of academic procedures and protocols. Understanding of STEM, health, sciences, and public health undergraduate programs.
Experience in academic management and implementation in a similar capacity.
Understanding of the student mentorship process, collegiate systems, and post-graduate pipeline programs.
Highly effective organizational skills, time management, responsibility, leadership, and motivation.
Excellent written communication skills, ability to develop and design written program materials, including PowerPoint presentations. Ability to respond in written form concisely and clearly to program inquiries.
Ability to proofread, edit and prepare scientific presentations for printing and publication.
Excellent listening skills, including verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, follow-up, problem-solving and decision-making.
Ability to communicate, build relationships, gain trust, and effectively work with and through volunteers.
Ability to train, develop, and increase engagement and motivation of volunteers at all levels.
Must have at least intermediate knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
Ability to travel 15% of the time with some overnight travel.
