The American Heart Association’s Initiative, Voices for Healthy Kids, has an excellent opportunity for a Media Advocacy Manager. This position can be remote but MUST live near a major airport. The Media Advocacy Manager is responsible for providing communications and media advocacy expertise, tools, and training to move policy priorities forward and position campaigns for success, including the development of media advocacy toolkits to train coalition advocates and resources for communicating with the media with a goal to promote public debate, and generate community support for changes in policies.
This is a full time, grant funded, benefits eligible opportunity. Current funding is through 11/30/2022 with strong confidence in continued funding beyond 2022.
Essential Job Duties:
Promotes and shares policy research and analysis and develops targeted outreach materials that translate AHA’s work for advocates to use with their various audiences. Establishes effective collaboration with all Advocacy Organization staff to create opportunities to inform policy dialogues and outcomes.
Provides media advocacy assistance to assigned coalitions and volunteers through one-on-one coaching, developing tools, including media advocacy toolkits, and developing and implementing training with advocates for communicating with the media to support the successful implementation of policy campaigns.
Attends and participates in all relevant AHA, Advocacy, and other external meetings throughout the year, including volunteer advocacy meetings, as appropriate.
Cultivates relationships with media, public health coalitions and other community leaders to help advance Advocacy Organization priorities and support and inform the Advocacy Organization's approach to public policy campaigns.

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related field.
2 to 5 years of relevant experience
Successful experience in promotion advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, media/communications, or grassroots advocacy tactic development and implementation
Ability to write accurate and compelling media statements, press releases, other communications/media advocacy tools
Exceptional oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated understanding in advocacy/public policy, state, local or tribal policy efforts, media/communications tactics, development and implementation.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, collaborators, and the public as part of a team
Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints
Facilitate trainings and coaching of volunteers and advocates as spokespersons
Ability to travel up to 20% (local and overnight)
Knowledge of voluntary health organizations or nonprofit organizations
Experience working in public health policy, health equity, and/or understanding of social determinants of health; building equitable communities
Experience in volunteer management and training/coaching volunteers on communications skills like planning, spokesperson trainings, or additional skill sets.
Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems
Experience with digital communications, social media, and graphic design
Read, write and speak English fluently. Spanish fluency preferred.
