Due to the current pandemic, daily travel is minimal and voluntary to ensure the health and safety of staff. There is no overnight travel currently. In the future, this position may resume daily and/or overnight travel. All AHA offices are closed and staff are currently working from home. Offices will be reopening in September 2021 and a full-time basis in January 2022; this position will resume to being based in the local office. This position is a full-time position.


The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Director of Community Impact for our Metro NYC, NY market and will be based in our NYC office. The Senior Director will drive the execution of health impact goals addressing health inequities by focusing in the areas of chronic disease management, particularly those factors elevated as most significant based upon the market’s Community Health Needs Assessment - hypertension, nutrition, and tobacco control / vaping prevention. Additional areas of focus include cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, physical activity and CPR education.

Effectively integrate population health strategies – prioritizing policy, system or environmental changes – focusing on collaboration with Development, Quality Outcomes Research & Analytics, Advocacy and Communications & Marketing partners. As a player/coach, supervise the activities of 2 community impact director(s) in the market. Serve as internal consultant to the region/territory on community and population health strategies and trends with a specialized focus on efforts to drive health improvement across diverse communities.


  • With the VP of Health, develop and implement an overall community action plan that includes engagement in collective impact efforts (either leading or supporting) and positioning strategies, driving to organizational goals around healthy behavior, which includes community-level advocacy, blood pressure management, nutrition access, tobacco / vaping control, worksite wellness and other health impact initiatives. This includes an engagement plan for key volunteers and strategic alliances, institutions and corporate relationships. Strong focus on those activities that will have the greatest impact on the largest and most critical populations in order to progress towards the Association’s 2024 goals through policy, systems and environmental change.

  • Successfully build and implement a cross-functional market strategy with strong integration of Health Strategies and Development. Establish an effective communication strategy to update, educate and mobilize staff colleagues about market objectives.

  • Effectively recruit, train, and manage volunteers and strategic community alliances (faith-based institutions, FQHCs, grassroots community organizations, etc.) in support of our efforts to address social influencers of health. Engage in collective impact initiatives in targeted communities and create a sustainable culture of health throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Mobilize volunteers across all sectors of the organization’s work to focus on priority communities and collective impact goals.

  • Identify and assist in recruiting diverse volunteers to serve in leadership roles on market board of directors and event ELTs (Executive Leadership Teams), with a focus on corporate C-suite and civic and philanthropic leaders.

  • Collaborate with development staff partners and volunteers to identify, cultivate, and secure program funding, including sponsorship (cash and in-kind) for relevant campaigns that maximize health impact and are aligned with strategic priorities; and assist with activation.

  • Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders, including regional and state-level health strategies colleagues, to ensure that local opportunities are aligned with the Association’s agenda at the state and regional level.

  • Supervise, guide and direct team to achieve program goals. Accountable for achievement of market community impact goals and for hiring, directing, training, evaluating, and terminating staff under direct supervision. The Senior Director will work directly with assigned staff to coach and train them as part of onboarding to the AHA and/or into new positions within the AHA. S/he will create and maintain a professional work environment that fosters and values collaboration, trust teamwork, empowerment, professionalism and diversity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

  • Five+ (5) years experience developing community led programs, projects or events related to community health issues, ability to interact across multiple acculturation levels and socio-economic groups.

  • Five+ (5) years experience engaging, motivating and retaining volunteer leaders in public health, education, marketing, public relations and/or community programs.

  • Three (3) years of experience in strategic planning, plan execution, and staff supervision.

  • Two (2) years of experience in recruiting, mobilizing, managing, recognizing, and evaluating volunteers. Experience in training others on volunteer management and monitoring progress.

  • Demonstrated strategic thinking skills in assessment of environments and available resources.

  • Knowledge of the social determinants of health and behavior modification through self-care activities and policy/system-wide changes.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage large projects and events ensuring deadline compliance.

  • Ability to productively participate in a multi-disciplinary team environment working towards common goals with internal and external clients. Ability to influence team members without supervisory authority.

  • Self-motivated, highly effective organization and analytical skills, multi-tasking, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Intermediate knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office for word processing, email, presentations, and spreadsheets.

  • Ability to travel at least 60% of the time within assigned coverage area (5 boroughs of New York City), some overnight travel could be required.

  • Proven ability to conduct meetings with internal and external clients including interacting with external partners/sponsors representing AHA to the public, as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Public Health

  • Three+ years experience in healthcare systems change or improvement

  • Three+ years experience in community health and population benefit education

  • Three+ years experience in fundraising or business development

  • Experience working with multicultural and underserved communities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of AHA mission programs

Compensation & Benefits

Employees scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week are eligible to participate in the medical, dental, and vision plans the first of the month following 30 days of service. AHA subsidizes the medical and dental cost to ensure benefits are affordable. Eligible dependents under AHA’s group benefit plans include legal spouse, domestic partner, children under the age of 26 or who are disabled. AHA offers additional benefits like an EAP, telehealth benefit for general medical and behavioral health, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, and disability.

Retirement Plans: AHA retirement plans offer employees a way to start saving after their first paycheck. The retirement plans provide employer contributions after two years of service. If you have previous 501(c)(3) non-profit experience, within the last 5 years, at a national health agency, an institution of higher learning or a medical institution, that experience may count towards the two-year waiting period. Employees are 100% vested in employee and employer contributions.

Paid Days Off: Regular full-time and part-time employees earn Paid Time Off (PTO) based on years of service. PTO begins accruing on date of hire. Full time employees receive one paid Community Service time off day per year and are encouraged to participate in projects, programs and organizations which contribute to the health and vitality of their communities. AHA also offers 12 paid holidays per year.

Leaves of Absence: AHA offers both Short Term and Long-Term Disability benefits which replace earnings if you are unable to work due to a non-work-related illness or injury. Employees are eligible for Short Term Disability after 90 days of service and are eligible for Long Term Disability after being disabled for 90 days or more. Eligible employees can take up to 12 weeks off of work for a qualified leave of absence under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), intermittent FMLA leaves and leave as an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended (ADAAA.
