The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Sr. Database Designer in our National Center. Location of the select candidate is flexible as long as it allows for cost effective and efficient travel.
In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and production of medium to complex database designs by analyzing data inquiry needs, ensuring security of information and organizing layout for the best user interface and access by scientists and researchers. Additional responsibilities include reviewing data (such as epidemiological, population data, e-medical records, metabolic and related data environments), developing data dictionaries, schemas, and validation checks to design and implement databases with the capacity to scale in a cloud-based architecture. The Sr. Database Designer is responsible for recommending and developing data management and data access policies, standards, and procedures.
This is a full time, grant funded, benefits eligible opportunity. Current funding is through 6/30/2024.
*Due to the current pandemic, travel is minimal and voluntary to ensure the health and safety of staff. There is no overnight travel currently. In the future, this position may resume daily/overnight travel. All staff are currently working from home. In the future, if selected candidate is in DFW area, this position will resume being based in the local office*
Essential Job Duties:
Analyze assigned business/product data management needs, establish data mapping and design database(s) to standardize and harmonize large clinical datasets (real world data) from American Heart Association registries as well as other large datasets
Design and develop schemas, user interface, data integration, definitions, and data dictionaries. Facilitate collaboration with subject matter experts in clinical data and research, and external entities such as Amazon and Verily to gather database standards, procedures and policies
Assist in further developing SQL database, query requirements, and data management protocols for large clinical datasets in AWS cloud environment
Develop and document overall project design for publication or scientific meetings. Present and educate researchers on impact of cloud-based technology and application to the assigned business unit/product

Bachelor’s Degree - Information Technology – Database Design, Applied Math, Computational Science, Health Informatics, or related technical field. PhD in Computer or Data Science preferred
Minimum of seven (7) years of experience with database design, development, data mapping or related area.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience with real world clinical data, data management and regulatory requirements for use of data
Minimum of three (3) years of experience leading database design projects for big data including application of advanced data migration and mapping techniques
In-depth knowledge of cloud-based architecture such as AWS
Comprehensive skills in R and/or Python, Jupyter Notebooks, SQL
Highly effective organizational skills, time management, responsibility, and motivation
Must be able to travel overnight approx. 20% of the time
