Responsibilities

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Sr. Manager, Field Consultation in our National Center office located in Dallas, TX (Remote/Home Based is acceptable) .

The Sr Manager of Field Consultation is responsible for effectively leading, coaching, training, directing and evaluating Field Consultation Staff - including four (4) State and Community Advocacy Managers, a State and Community Policy Analyst, and a Training Manager. In this role, you will be tasked with providing hands-on field consulation and technical support to AHA Staff, external organizations, and public policy coalitions working to advance the AHA’s public policy priorities to address childhood obesity. Assistance to organizations and coalitions will emcompass the entire range of policy change activities including strategic campaign planning, bill drafting, media, grassroots, grasstops and coalition development and management using American Heart Association’s Strategic Technical Assistance model.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Manages, directs, and applies account management approach to develop and implement customized, strategic technical assistance plans necessary to support state and local obesity and advocacy organizations and coalitions to successfully address campaign plans. Oversees effective relationship management of funded state and local obesity and advocacy organizations and coalitions to ensure that these grantees effectively implement technical assistance and campaign plans.

  • Utilizes effective management techniques in the selection, supervision, monitoring, training and counseling of Field Consultation Staff to achieve organizational objectives. Creates and maintains a professional work environment that fosters and values collaboration, trust teamwork, empowerment, professionalism and diversity.

  • Ensures effective collaboration with all Voices for Healthy Kids and RWJF Technical Assistance Staff to monitor and assess the effectiveness of field technical assistance and support to achieve Advocacy Organization's

  • Attends and participates in all relevant AHA, RWJF, and other external meetings throughout the year, including volunteer advocacy meetings, as appropriate.

  • Cultivate relationships for public health coalitions and other community leaders to help advance Voices for Healthy Kids priorities and support and inform Voices for Healthy Kids approach to technical assistance for state and local campaigns.

  • Oversees budget for Field Consultation Team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, law, journalism and relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of successful experience or demonstrated understanding in advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, media/communications, and grassroots advocacy tactic development and implementation.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, state and federal government activities and structures. Ability to assess the local and state governments related to advocacy issues.

  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.

  • Prior experience managing staff.

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and the public as part of a team.

  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 50% of the time.

  • Knowledge of voluntary health organizations or nonprofit organizations.

  • Experience working in public health policy.

  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems.

  • Experience in volunteer management.
